Besides the unwanted looks, there might be some health issues connected with excessively big breasts like skin rashes, bra straps cutting into your shoulders, and even back and neck pain. Since large breasts are heavy, they are more prone to sag. We perform a breast reduction to diminish the size of the breasts by removing the excess fat and skin and lift them up. This is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in Turkey.
Surgeons do recommend a clinical breast exam before all breast surgeries. During the operation, the patient needs to get general anesthesia. The surgery takes two to four hours in which the extra fat, tissue, and skin are removed, usually from the lower half of the breast. Incisions will leave an anchor-shaped scar called "inverted T." It will go around the nipple, down to the base of the breast in a straight line, and finally horizontally along the crease.
In most breast reduction surgeries, lactiferous ducts are uninjured. In other words, no incisions are made that could endanger breastfeeding. Similarly, the nerve ends of the nipple are protected, and the nipple does not lose its distinctive sensitivity. However, if the breast is excessively large and/or the patient is old enough to not to plan to breastfeed, other surgical techniques are available which might be unfavorable for the lactiferous ducts or the sensitivity of the nipple, with the consent of the patient.
Generally, patients spend the night at the hospital after the surgery. The surgical pain is light and relieved with over-the-counter painkillers. After the surgery, in three or four days the medical dressings are removed. The patients can get back to work or school in four to seven days. A sports or medical bra should be worn for approximately three weeks following the surgery.
