There are a lot of ear deformilties either by accident or by birth. So eiher by accident or by birth missing a part of the ear, creased or folded ears, or like captian Sparke a pointy ear top are some of the deformilities.
But the most common ear deformility is a scoop ear.There are 3 main problems with a scoop ear deformility.
1- There should be aangle of 30-35 degree from top to the ear lobe but if there is a larger angle then the ears will appear larger.
2- The folds on the ear have not deveoped well.
3- The ear cartlidge beig larger than normal.
The human ear development is usally completed around 90% by he age of 6 years old. The surgery should be performed ater the age of 6 as it can affect the development of the ea i performed earlier.
We usually advse hat the child is operated just before they srt school to avoid pear presure.
With the ear operation the cut is applied at the back of the ear.The deformility is corrected folds are fixed and the size and angle is corrected. With this procedure we make the corrections to mae the ear look natural. With adults this procedıre can be done under general aneshetic but with kids general anesthetic is not advised.
The operation takes about 1-1,5 Hours. There will be comprssionbandages applied to the ears during the operation.General pain killers re gven for pain management. The bandages can come off in 3-4 days and a tennis band is placed over the ears for 3 weeks.
The patient can return to there daily life after this prcedure.
